Deus Ex places you in the shoes of J C Denton, futuristic anti-terrorist agent, in a dark and violent first person adventure that combines the best elements of stealth, strategy, shooting and role playing games to create a truly unique experience.
The action takes place in a near-future America, ravaged by a plague called the 'Gray Death', and at war with itself over the cure, the Ambrosia vaccine. Supplies of Ambrosia are low, pricing the cure out of reach of the general public, and now the general public is resorting to terrorism to stay alive. Your orders, unsurprisingly, are to stop them, but as the game progresses, you'll come to question those orders, and the people that gave them to you. Corruption, conspiracy and espionage are in the air, and it's up to you to decide who to trust, and who to fear.
At first glance, Deus Ex appears to be a standard first-person shooter, but under the surface lies a much more complex game. Each mission can be approached in a variety of ways, forcing you to choose between stealth, brute force, or something in-between. What's more, the decisions you make affect the way people react to you in future encounters - trigger happy players may find themselves in hot water for use of excessive force, while the more stealthy will lose out on the respect that comes with killing an entire team of terrorists.
Deus Ex began life on the PC, but developer Ion Storm has spared no effort to ensure the game is optimised for the PS2. The DualShock controller will offer players full analogue control over JC's movements, allowing you to switch from stealthy creeping to a flat out sprint with the flick of a thumb. There are graphical improvements too, with new motion capture routines and an enhanced polygon count ensuring that the PS2 version will be even more atmospheric than the original.
Deus Ex is the thinking PS2 owner's first-person shooter, rewarding patient and thoughtful players with new weapons, upgrades and areas to explore at every turn. This non-linear structure means that there are countless different ways to play through the game, creating a sense of freedom that's unparalleled in the genre. Already a classic on the PC, the improvements made to the PlayStation 2 edition make this the definitive version of Deus Ex - a hugely involving (and evolving) game that will provide months, if not years, of enjoyment.
