The game is a 2D one on one fighting title, a genre highly popular throughout the 1990's. Each character supports a large number of special moves and individual fighting styles, and at the end of a match, players have the option to unleash an "Overkill" on a defeated opponent, which brutally kills the loser in a graphic manner, or use the background itself for a stage kill.

Eternal Champions was considered by many critics to be one of the best fighting games for the Sega Megadrive, and spawned a Sega CD upgrade.
