Perhaps walking through a gloomy haunted mansion where several horrific murders took place doesn't sound so terrible to you? Ok, then imagine that you will be facing darkness and a host of tormented supernatural creatures as a vulnerable college girl with onlty a camera at her side...
Project Zero is an innovative survival horror game in which your sole 'weapon' is a camera. Set in the mysterious environs of Himuro Mansion, a spooky and abandoned manor house, the game puts you in control of Miku, a spirited young girl with a sixth sense that allows her to see things not normally visible to the human eye. After her journalist brother Mafuyu goes missing while searching for his benefactor in the mansion, Miku is determined to track him down. Her only weapon against the manor's eerie inhabitants is a camera with supernatural powers, which is capable of trapping the errant souls of ghosts. It soon becomes apparent that something is very, very wrong at Himuro Mansion, but can Miku survive long enough to uncover the truth and save her brother?
Tecmo's first survival horror offering is an interesting take on the genre. While certain aspects of the game, such as the 'Herbal medicines' and some of the puzzles, will be pretty familiar territory to survival horror fans, there's plenty of originality and innovative little touches in there as well. Most significantly is the absence of any conventional weapons; the camera is your first and last line of defence against the game's ethereal enemies. By entering viewfinder mode, you get a first person perspective on the action, whilst still being able to move around using the right analog stick. The longer you focus your viewfinder on a ghost, the more damage you inflict with the shot, and there are various ways of improving the camera's basic performance and adding new functionality. When you're not snapping away at malevolent supernatural entities (many of which you may find disturbing), there are some well thought out puzzle mechanics to keep you occupied. One of the Project Zero's most impressive aspects is the moody atmosphere that runs through the entire game. Grainy, cinematic cut scenes, superb use of the DualShock's vibration function and seriously disquieting audio effects make Project Zero a tense and unnerving affair from start to finish.
Good quality ghost themed games are pretty few and far between these days, particularly when compared to the burgeoning numbers of zombie / alien / demon related titles out there. Anyone looking for a genuinely scary otherworldly experience on their xBox would be well advised to check this game out.
