Colosseum's gameplay is set against the background of Ancient Rome during the tyrannical reign of the Emperor Commodus. The game is a combination of role playing and action based upon the players life as a gladiator.

The gameplay follows the career of a slave picked to enter a training camp and who then starts a life as a gladiator. The player progresses through training and a series of early contests and then on a path decided and controlled by the player of the game--will they survive and win their freedom?

The player earns money and career points as they progress through a multitude of training regimes and gladiatorial contests. These can be used to buy new weapons, armour, shields and upgrades as the game story line progresses. As the player's chosen character becomes more successful, the abilities and strength of the gladiator character increase accordingly.
