Developed by Tecmo, Dead or Alive caused a massive stir in the fighting game genre. With an arcade heritage already established, this version of DOA was drastically enhanced to make full use of PlayStation hardware.
First and foremost, Dead or Alive is an exceptionally good 3D fighting game! Tecmo took strong inspiration from the most successful fighting games, created a new 3D engine and crafted a well balanced, responsive and addictive fighting experience.
The action is typical of 3D fighting games, with each character competing for conquest of the streets. The atmosphere of the game is gritty, tough and extremely brutal. A fantastic feature of Dead or Alive is the 'Danger Zone'. This is the area around the outside perimeter of the main ring. If you manage to knock an opponent down onto the danger zone, pyrotechnics occur and extra damage is inflicted on the victim.
